Rapeseed
Brassica napus
Rapeseed, or oilseed rape, is one of our two largest crops by area. Together with winter wheat it carries the farm through the year, grown at scale in Latvia for the open market.
Through the Latvian winter
Rapeseed keeps us on our toes. Insects have to be kept out. Deer and wild boar do real damage over winter, and after a hard frost there is always the question of whether the crop survived. Vita checks every field each week to stay ahead of it.
What our rapeseed is used for
Rapeseed oil
Most of the crop is pressed into rapeseed oil for food and sold on the open market.
Meal and food
What remains becomes meal for bread, pasta and other everyday food products.
Open market trade
We sell our rapeseed through larger Baltic traders such as Scandagra, who distribute it worldwide.
